How the Graphics Card Works

Posted on 03:44 by Unknown
HP NVIDIA Quadro FX3700 512MB Graphics Card

Tiny dots made up of images that you see on the monitor, which is called pixels. The most common set up of a computer monitor will have millions of pixels, and the computer is the one that decides in what to do in each one of them. For the computer to manage all this pixels and produce an image, it needs a translator. This is to transform binary data, which are just values of one and zero, from the processor and turn in to an image. The translation of these binary data is done on the graphic card unless the computer has a built-in graphics capability into its motherboard.

The function of the graphics card is a little complex but its parts and philosophy are easy to understand. Let us take up the basic part of this computer hardware and what they do, and how to make them more efficient. The philosophy of this hardware is much like the same with the same in a business. If the owner wants an artwork to be done, he or she sends a request to the artwork department. The department would then think of ways to create the image and then implies the chosen method. The result is the owner’s idea is made possible to be understood by others through the artwork created.

The function of the graphics card works in the same idea as the example given. The Central Processing Unit, working with other running programs and applications, sends a request to the card along with the information needed. The card would then decide which pixels to use and use these pixels in order to display the complete image on the screen. The information from the card is then sent to the computer’s monitor ready for viewing of the user.

The whole process of creating the image is a bit hard. In order to create a 3-D image, the graphics card first need to create with strait lines. After that, it fills all the remaining pixels or rasterized it. It then adds the texture, color and lighting. If the user is playing a 3-D game, the computer does this more than 60 times per second. If this hardware were not present to the computer, the workload would be too much for the computer to handle alone.

The graphics card, with the help of the motherboard, processor, memory and monitor, does the task of displaying an image. The motherboard is for the supply of power and allows connection for the data to use. The processors help the card decide on what to do with each pixel on the computer screen. The memory serves as the storage of information that is going to be used in each pixel. In addition, the memory also holds the completed image or picture temporarily. Lastly, the monitor allows the user to view the completed result of translating the binary data.

The graphics card allows you to play games and movies in your computer. If you want to make your computer faster and more efficient, you can try replacing with a new one.
